چکیده

The discovery of now about 20 extrasolar planets orbiting solar-type stars with properties quite different from those in our Solar System has raised many questions about the formation and evolution of planets. The tidal interaction between the planet and the surrounding disk determines the orbital properties and the mass of the planet. We have performed numerical computations of planets embedded in a protoplanetary disk and found that for typical values of the viscosity the planet may easily grow up-to ten Jupiter masses. New results on the mass evolution and the migration of the planet are presented.

Falling Transiting Extrasolar Giant Planets

We revisit the tidal stability of extrasolar systems harboring a transiting planet and demonstrate that, independently of any tidal model, none but one (HAT-P-2b) of these planets has a tidal equilibrium state, which implies ultimately a collision of these objects with their host star. Consequently, conventional circularization and synchronization timescales cannot be defined because the corres...

Imaging Protoplanetary Disks with a Square Kilometer Array

The recent detections of extrasolar giant planets has revealed a surprising diversity of planetary system architectures, with many very unlike our Solar System. Understanding the origin of this diversity requires multiwavelength studies of the structure and evolution of the protoplanetary disks that surround young stars. Radio astronomy and the Square Kilometer Array will play a unique role in ...

Tidal Evolution of Close-in Extrasolar Planets

The distribution of eccentricities e of extrasolar planets with semimajor axes a > 0:2 AU is very uniform, and values for e are relatively large, averaging 0.3 and broadly distributed up to near 1. For a < 0:2 AU, eccentricities are much smaller (most e < 0:2), a characteristic widely attributed to damping by tides after the planets formed and the protoplanetary gas disk dissipated. Most previou...

The Evolution of Protoplanetary Disks around Millisecond Pulsars: the Psr 1257 +12 System

We model the evolution of protoplanetary disks surrounding millisecond pulsars, using PSR 1257+12 as a test case. Initial conditions were chosen to correspond to initial angular momenta expected for supernova-fallback disks and disks formed from the tidal disruption of a companion star. Models were run under two models for the viscous evolution of disks: fully viscous and layered accretion disk...

A safety net for fast migrators: Interactions between gap-opening and sub-gap-opening bodies in a protoplanetary disk

Young planets interact with their parent gas disks through tidal torques. An imbalance between inner and outer torques causes bodies of mass & 0.1 Earth masses (M⊕) to lose angular momentum and migrate inward rapidly relative to the disk; this is known as “Type I” migration. However, protoplanets that grow to gas giant mass, O(10)M⊕ , open a gap in the disk and are subsequently constrained to m...
